About Rookwood Chess
Rookwood Chess is a complete, polished game of chess for your browser. Every rule of the real game is in place: castling with all its conditions, en passant, pawn promotion with a choice of piece, check, checkmate, stalemate, the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition and draws by insufficient material. Pieces glide across the board, the last move is highlighted, your king glows red when it is in check, and captured pieces and the material balance are always visible.
Choose your opponent from five computer levels. Rookie is a gentle sparring partner that blunders now and then, Casual and Club spot tactics and punish careless moves, Expert plans several moves ahead, and Master searches as deep as it can think. The computer thinks in small slices, so the game never freezes, even on a phone. Prefer a human rival? Switch to 2 Players and share one device, flipping the board whenever you like.
Moves are simple: tap a piece to see its legal squares, then tap a dot, or drag the piece where you want it. Take back mistakes with Undo, and ask for a Hint when you are stuck; both are limited per game but can be refilled by watching an optional rewarded video.
Sharpen your tactics with sixty mate puzzles, from mate in one to mate in three. Every puzzle has exactly one winning first move, and you earn up to three stars for solving it without mistakes or hints. Wins and solved puzzles earn style points that unlock new piece sets, such as Jade and Emerald or Neon Circuit, and new boards, including Moss and Dusk. Your win streak is saved for every difficulty. Whether you are learning the opening principles or chasing a Master-level upset, Rookwood Chess is easy to start and hard to put down.
